Decorative Painted Wooden Box

I painted this box a number of years ago. I really like it but it is time to let it go.

*8.5" high x 8.5" wide at the widest point (from the front lip to the outside edge of the handle)

* base is 4" deep (front to back) and tapers toward the top, which is 2.5" deep (front to back).

* lid is hinged and flips open. The interior of the container is not painted.

*I think I painted this in oils, but it's been so long I am not 100% certain

* the back is plain.

Things are going crazy on this blog tonight. I have to use different colors because normal stuff is invisible and I have no control over the bold, italics, or sizes - it is just doing what it wants - thus the colorful and inconsistent post. Enjoy :)

This is an original drawing, print and painting signed by me (on the back).
This is a series of two. I drew the dog (from a photo I took), scanned and printed it on acid free card stock, painted it with transparent liquid acrylics, then varnished. I thought the card stock seemed flimsy so I collaged (fancy talk for glued) it onto another piece, so it is double thick, and has the weight and feel more like a playing card.
ABOUT THIS ACEO
This ACEO was inspired by two things. First, I took some photographs over the Fourth Of July at Lake Arrowhead. There was a couple in the shopping village walking 4 of the nicest, most beautiful and well behaved Labradors. Each one was a different color. Of course I had to take some pictures, and that is what inspired me to do this series of dog ACEO's. Secondly, it just happens to fit this months theme for the ACEO YBA contest. Also, these ACEO's also provide a method for me to plan and prepare for larger gallery paintings based on them, sort of like a sketchbook.
ABOUT THE CONTEST
There is a monthly contest starting on the 15th of each month. The winner is the artist whose ACEO gets the most unique bidders. That means the most individual bidders, so a card with two people in a bidding war with a toatl of 50 votes would be beaten out by a card with a 3 bidders and a total of 3 bids. It's sort of like one vote(bid) per person(bidder). ANyway I thought it wold be fun to join in and play.

This group was founded by ACEO artists and collectors, to create a brand new ACEO awards program/art contest, which began on September 15th, 2008.

The ACEO YBA will:

1 - Recognize and promote our fellow ACEO artists, in a wide variety of ACEO-specific categories... that may not be found in other awards programs.

2 - Increase awareness of the ACEO movement on eBay... thus encouraging new artists and collectors to come and enjoy creating, selling and collecting ACEOs.

I actually did this little painting in the Carol Marine workshop at the Andreeva Portrait Academy in Santa Fe a few weeks back - or is it a few months back now. I don't know, time goes so fast. This painting is varnished so it has a little shine to it, making it difficult to photograph well. It looks pretty good on my monitor - but would look so much better in your house!

This painting is from life (as almost all of mine are). I had to work very quickly because I had my spot light very close to the pear and it was "cooking" it really fast, causing it to change colors! This was painted on a canvas board that I prepared with a metallic gold paint. You really can't see it very well in this photo, and I can't seem to be able to photograph it so it shows up and makes sense. The very light yellow and white areas in the background are some of the gold. The gold is very subtle and only really shows in little spots here and there, mostly around the edges and in the background. It was fun, and I want to do more. I hope you like it.

I had a wonderful relaxing vacation at the lake, got some good starts on some larger painting and now I am back and ready to get back into the routine of working. I love what I do - painting, I mean - it's just the routine and scheduling and consistency that runs completely against my nature. Once I get going it's not much of a problem, it's the starting that is the roughest part.

A LITTLE HISTORY LESSON AND EXPLANATION OF ACEO'S AND ATC'S

ACEO means Artist Card Editions and Originals.
ATC stands for Artist Trading Card.
ATC's and ACEO's are collectible.
ATC's are the artist's substitute for sports-themed trading cards. There are two rules for ATC's: they must measure 2.5"x3.5" so they will fit in the same plastic sleeves that sports cards are kept in and they can NEVER be sold - only traded. Oops, three rules - the artist writes their name, contact information, title of the ATC and number (1/8, 2/8...) if it's part of an edition.

ATCs are called originals; sets of identical ATCs are called editions and are numbered; sets of ATCs that are based on one theme but that are different are called series.
OOAK means One Of A Kind.

That explains ATC's but what about ACEO's? Since ATC's can't be sold, only artists can trade and collect with other artist effectively cutting out non-artists who appreciate the art and would like to collect it. Therefor, ACEO's became the answer to this dilemma - they can be sold and purchased and traded freely, including everyone who wants to play and collect.

Vacation and Thank You

So what does a peacock have to do with anything? Nothing really - it's just a beautiful bird. This one is standing on the barn roof in the evening sun, stamping his feet and shimmying - trying to attract the attention of one of the many bored and indifferent females wondering around. This was shot at the historic Leo Carrillo Ranch, which we live very near to.
So first and most important - THANK YOU to everyone who has purchased my daily paintings, who reads my blogs and sends me email. I love and appreciate you so much. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Your support means so much to me and keeps me going.
Speaking of going...I am going on vacation until after July 4Th. Actually, this is not completely a vacation - I have several show/gallery opportunities coming up and I have to spend every minute I can painting for these, then a day or two off with family at the lake. These paintings will be larger work - more time and energy consuming.
I will be back with my little daily paintings after the Fourth, so don't wander off too far.
